What event was it in which the Athenians had lost a battle against a much smaller island..?

..I believe it was the Athenians or quite possible the Spartans..

They had waged war against a much smaller island north of their land, and had lost due to lack of land surveying..

A source would be wonderful.

Thanks

You mean when they attacked Syracuse on the island of Sicily at the end of the Peloponnesian war? It's in Thucydides 'History of the Peloponnesian War', or just look it up on Wikipedia.

That might not be what your talking about (since Sicily is a relatively big island in reality), but that's the best I can do with the information you gave me.
Reply:This was during the Peloponnesian war between Sparta , a land based power , and Athens which was a naval power .

You are probably referring to the island of Sicily which is also known as the Syracusan Expedition/Sicilian Campaign which came to grief because of poor logistical planning and survivors were imprisoned in an old rock quarry ; very few Athenians survived the debacle .
